LYLA RAE (VANVALKENBURG) SLOCUM age 73 of Perry, New York, died Thursday January 18, 2024 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. She was born the daughter of Howard and Berneida (Waite) VanValkenburg Sr. on October 12, 1950 in Warsaw, New York.  She married Douglas Slocum on October 22, 1982.  She worked at Champion Products in Perry as a production manager from 1973 to 1993.  She also worked at the Perry Shopper for over 10 years retiring in 2015. She attended the First Congregational Church of Perry Center.  She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by 2 daughters: Suzette M. (Todd) Barvian of Attica, Sara Jo (Robert) Yencer of Mt. Morris, 2 sons: Steven M. (Trista) Slocum of Leicester, Brian (Julie) Blackmore of Perry, 14 grandchildren: Gregory Slocum, Karissa Slocum-Sardina, Nicole (Michael) Grover, Brock (Rachel) Minnick, Laura (Nelson) Gallinger, Lexee Jo Barvian, Cody (Kristen) Slocum, Cassidy (Brad) Slocum, Nicki (Spencer) Baker, Carley Jo Yencer, Owen Yencer, Brianna (Michael) Collins, Bailey Blackmore and Brice Blackmore and 13 great grandchildren.  4 sisters Mary Jane Celeste of Buffalo, Linda Ridall of Rochester, Leoti (Donald) Cudney of Byron and Wendy (Brian) Moran of Nunda.  2 brothers Wayne John (Nancy) and Ted VanValkenburg both of Perry.  Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Douglas L. Slocum in 2023: 2 sons Michael P. Slocum who passed away in 2010 and Scott D. Slocum who passed away in 2011 and 2 Brothers Howard VanValkenburg Jr. and Ronald Pete VanValkenburg

Friends may call Wednesday January 24th from 4 to 7 pm at the JOHN W. MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, 37 Chapel Street, (Route 408), Mount Morris where Prayers will be said following calling hours by Pastor Eric Kelly.  Interment Prospect Hill Cemetery in Perry Center at a later date.  Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.  Sign the online registry at
