Shirley VanZandvoord of Murray Street died Jan. 22, 2012 at age 83.

She was born Jan. 7, 1929. She was predeceased by her husband Adrian (John) VanZandvoord.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Oakes of Mount Morris; grandchildren, Nathan and Sarah Oakes of Chicago and Boston respectively; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog friend, Lucy.

Born Jan. 7, 1929 in Rochester N.Y., Shirley came from a Kodak family and worked there herself after graduating from John Marshall High School until joining her husband in his family's baking business.

She was an avid horsewoman and was secretary for several local horse shows as well as being a riding instructor for the Mendon Pony Club. Shirley will be remembered as a wonderful cook, a talented rug hooker and kept her charm and sense of humor up until the end.

At her request, no calling hours or services will be held. Interment and a gathering in her memory will be held sometime in May. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Town of York Historical Society, PO Box 115, York, NY 14592, or for the care of the hounds of the Genesee Valley Hunt, PO Box 52, Geneseo, NY 14454.
